Language Development and Reading Readiness
SRA/McGraw Hill “Imagine It!” is our theme based pre-reading program. It introduces students to phonological, phonemic as well as print awareness through oral blending and segmentation. Students will also learn new vocabulary, different writing genres, basic grammar and sentence structure. Through “Imagine It!” students discover themselves and the world around them. Some of the themes included are Friends, Seasons, Animals, The Five Senses, and Community Helpers.
Mathematics
Everyday Math Counts Pre-K “Calendar Math” is what we follow so the students gain knowledge about numbers, number order, one-to-one correspondence, counting orally from 1-10, days of the week, months of the year, patterns, basic shapes and colors.
*Daily “center time” provides the students with an opportunity to apply the concepts learned in both language and mathematics. The students participate in small groups such as café, flower shop, library, and writing corner as well as solve puzzles and play interactive games.
Religion
The Religion program utilized in Pre-K is “Seeds”. It follows the weekly Gospel and puts it in terms the children can understand. It also ties it into the way we live today. In addition to this, we read and discuss Bible stories. We attend mass once a week.
The students are involved in the “Buddy” program where they are partnered with a seventh grade student who is a role model and mentor.
Science and Social Studies
Students delve into the world around them through big books and hands on activities like experiments and exploration. Holidays and traditions are also explored.
Along with classroom instruction students attend physical education classes and library twice a week and computer lab once a week.
