* This theme based reading program immerses students in daily phonemic awareness activities, opportunities for vocabulary development, various writing
genres, comprehension strategies, and basic grammar and handwriting lessons.
All literature focuses on a specific theme, such as “By the Sea” and “Friendship.” These themes provide excellent paths to teach social and science skills.
* These are essential reading skills an SBS student is expected to master or show progress towards mastery:
-Communicates in complete sentences
-Demonstrates correct pencil/paper placement, left to right, top to bottom progression when writing
-Writes first and last name correctly
-Identifies uppercase and lowercase letters
-Matches letters and sounds
-Phonemic awareness of initial, medial, final sounds
-Identifies and creates rhyming words
-Segments and blends simple CVC words
-Retells story with focus on characters, setting, problem, solution
-Sequences a story
-Shows progression in sight word reading
-Determines fiction/nonfiction stories
-Writes letters, words, sentences with correct formation, spacing
-Identifies period, question mark, exclamation point
-Demonstrates inventive spelling and progress in independent writing, and
-Identifies punctuation marks and usage (period, question mark, exclamation point)
Mathematics

* These are essential math skills an SBS student is expected to master or show progress towards mastery:
-Rote count to 50
-Count a set of objects to 31
-Order and write numerals to 20
-Recognize number words through 10
-Use math terms (more, less, add, subtract, equal, before, after, shorter, longer, small, medium, large, greater than, less than, whole, part, difference, length,
weight, temperature, measure, etc.)
-Sort and classify according to a variety of attributes
-Graph objects and determine data from a variety of graphs
-Add and subtract with manipulatives and record results
-Tell time to hour
-Identify pennies, nickels, dimes, quarters, dollars, and values
-Identify basic shapes and solids
-Create, copy, and extend patterns
Religion

* Along with daily religion lessons, our Kindergarteners attend a weekly school mass. Each homeroom class hosts a school mass at least once each year. Students
participate in various service projects of the school, such as Toys for Tots. The "Buddy” program also fosters spiritual growth as the students are partnered with an eighth
grade “buddy” who serves as a mentor and role model throughout the year. The religion curriculum is an inspiring, flexible program that instills a trust and loving
relationship with the Lord.
* The following are essential religion skills an SBS student should demonstrate or show progress towards mastery:
-Show reverence in Church
-Make the Sign of the Cross
-Show progress in learning prayers: The Hail Mary, Our Father, Glory Be, Blessing Before Meals
-Demonstrate Christian behavior and stewardship
-Demonstrates respect for self and others, and
-Respects rules and authority
Along with classroom instruction, students attend physical education classes twice per week, computer lab once per week, and library once per week. Art, social living, and daily interactive play are all embedded in instructional practices.
